Shurugwi North legislator Joseph Mpasi has called for heavy penalties against people responsible for starting veld fires, particularly those who carelessly discard cigarette stubs, as widespread veld fires continue to ravage parts of Shurugwi district.
Mpasi said the fires posed a serious threat to communities and the environment, destroying vegetation, wildlife, homes and livelihoods.
His call comes against the backdrop of widespread veld fires in the district, which have raised concern among communities over the destruction of forests, grazing land and property.
“Heavy penalties should be taken against those who cause veld fires, particularly those who willy-nilly dump their cigarette stubs,” Mpasi said.
“People should be responsible and understand that a small act of carelessness can result in the destruction of vast tracts of land, property and livelihoods.”
He urged communities to establish fire guards to help detect and contain fires before they spread, while calling on traditional leaders, councillors and other community leaders to intensify awareness and educational campaigns.
“Community leaders should take the lead in educating people about the dangers of veld fires,” Mpasi said.
“Communities should also have fire guards in place so that fires can be detected and contained before they spread and cause extensive damage.”

Mpasi said veld fires had devastating consequences for both the environment and communities.
“Veld fires destroy our flora and fauna as well as homesteads,” he said.
“We must therefore work together as communities to prevent these fires and protect our environment, property and livelihoods.”
He urged residents to exercise caution when using fire and to report irresponsible behaviour that could trigger fires.
The legislator also appealed to communities to remain vigilant during the dry season, when dry vegetation and strong winds can cause fires to spread rapidly across large areas.
With veld fires continuing to threaten parts of Shurugwi, Mpasi said prevention, community awareness and enforcement of existing laws were critical in protecting lives, property and the environment.
