BULAWAYO, SEPT 10, (SOUTHERN EYE LIVE): Police have confirmed the arrest of a 20-year-old man in connection with the theft of armoured copper cables worth US$12 000 from Zimplats Smelting Company in Selous.
In a statement, police said Jairosi James Moyo was arrested on September 7 following investigations into the theft that occurred at the smelting plant.
According to the police, Moyo allegedly committed the offence together with three accomplices who are still at large.
Following investigations, detectives tracked Moyo and apprehended him while he was removing cable casings along Makwiro Road in Selous. The other three suspects fled the scene.
Police recovered several items from Moyo, including one 150mm x 91m, 3-core armoured cable, a machete and a knife.
The arrest comes amid growing concern over cable theft targeting mining and industrial installations, which has resulted in production losses and service disruptions.
Police said investigations are continuing and efforts are underway to track down the remaining suspects.
Police urged anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of the fugitives to contact the nearest police station.
