A 20-year-old Fort Rixon man has been sentenced to 23 years in prison for allegedly raping an 84-year-old woman before robbing her of US$1 200.
Ndumiso Nyathi appeared before Bulawayo regional magistrate Sibonginkosi Mkandla and was found guilty on both counts.
He was sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment for rape and five years for robbery.
Of the five-year robbery sentence, two years were suspended on condition that he does not commit a similar offence within five years.
The court heard that the incident happened on July 29, 2026, at around 11:30am while the complainant was looking for her missing cow in the bush.
Prosecutor Tsungi Mutapi that Nyathi took advantage of the complainant’s advanced age and vulnerability, subjecting her to a dehumanising ordeal.
“You attacked an elderly woman who is defenceless before you sexually attacked her and robbed her,” the court heard.
“The complainant is old enough to be your grandmother, as such you ought to respect her rather than subject her to such a de-humanising act.
