BULAWAYO, SEPT 29 (SOUTHERN EYE LIVE): HWANGE Local Board has urged residents to stop disposing of non-flushable items such as wet wipes, sanitary products, paper towels and stones into sewer lines, warning that the materials are contributing to blockages.
Charles Chitambira, a supervisor in the sewer department under the engineering section, said such material clog the sewer lines.
“We, therefore, urge communities to avoid putting wet wipes, paper towels, sanitary products, old rags, stones or other non-flushable items into our sewer lines. These items clog the system and cause blockages,” he said.
“If you see us not responding to your queries, we are not ignoring you. We may be dealing with a lot of blockages, but we will come,” Chitambira said, adding that their target is attending to sewer blockages within 24 hours.
"If we are busy, we send people on the ground to assess how bad or dangerous the situation is to the community,” Chitambira said.
