Community-led agricultural projects are gaining momentum in Chivi Central, with local communities being supported to boost food production, create livelihoods and improve household incomes.
Speaking during a visit to the Tanaka-Hapabviwi village business unit in Ward 19, Chivi Central MP Xavier Maoneke said inclusive development remained central to efforts to transform rural communities.
“Today I visited Tanaka-Hapabviwi Village Business Unit in Ward 19, where locals are joining hands tending a thriving garden producing a variety of produce, among them green vegetables (rape), cabbages, tomatoes, carrots, onions and sweet potatoes for sale and family consumption,” Maoneke said.
During the visit, Maoneke donated sorghum seed, fertiliser, worm-management chemicals, fencing materials and poles to local farmers to support crop production and strengthen food security.
The visit was attended by Chief Chivi, Mr L Munamati, the chief director of Agricultural Planning and Development in the Ministry of Agriculture, Mechanisation and Water Resources Development, councillors from wards 14, 17 and 19, government departments and other stakeholders.
Meanwhile, in line with the President’s call to leave no one and no place behind in the quest for development, Maoneke also distributed more than 5 000 chicks, secured through the support of President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, to communities in Ward 19, particularly Masvingise and Takunda villages.
Three village business units benefited from the poultry initiative, opening opportunities for income generation, employment, food security and improved nutrition.
The poultry distribution follows an earlier donation of more than 5 000 chicks to communities in Gwamatenga, Zenzele and Masvingise village business units.

“We will continue taking those daily steps to empower our people and entrench sustainable development in our communities,” Maoneke said.
The initiatives are aimed at strengthening community participation in local economic development while creating opportunities for households to diversify their livelihoods through crop and poultry production.
Maoneke said communities in Chivi Central would continue working with government departments, local leadership and other stakeholders to advance development and ensure that communities benefit from programmes designed to improve their livelihoods.
