The Bulawayo City Pool, formerly known as Borrow Swimming Pool, on Saturday marked 100 years of swimming and sporting excellence. .
The pool was established in 1926, the same year Highlanders Football Club and Crusaders Swimming Club were founded, making the year a significant milestone in the development of sport in Bulawayo.
The celebrations brought together city officials, swimming clubs, sporting organisations and members of the public, with speakers highlighting the historic importance of the facility and the role swimming has played in the city's sporting development.
Mayor David Coltart was represented by councillor Ntombizodwa Khumalo, whileBulawayo Metropolitan Affairs minister Judith Ncube was represented by permanent secretary Paul Nyoni.
Town clerk Christopher Dube was represented by the director of housing and community services, Dictor Khumalo.
Speaking at the event, Khumalo said: “The 100 years of the Bulawayo City Pool is not only a celebration of a facility, but a celebration of the generations of Bulawayo residents who have learnt to swim, competed and built lasting memories here.”
Ncube said swimming remained an important part of Bulawayo's sporting identity and called for continued support for the development of the sport.
The city also honoured swimming clubs and other organisations that have contributed significantly to the development and maintenance of the swimming pool over the years, presenting them with certificates of appreciation.

The celebrations were capped by a swimming gala, which saw swimmers showcasing their skills as part of the centenary programme.
