BULAWAYO, SEPT 28 (SOUTHERN EYE LIVE): The Zimbabwe Down Syndrome Association (ZDSA) is appealing for financial and material support to revive its butter production project in Bulawayo.
The business venture, which at its peak produced 2000 bottles of peanut butter per week, used to sustain most of the members' daily needs.
The association says it still has the machinery, but cannot afford the raw materials needed to get the project running again.
ZDSA coordinator Sibonisiwe Mazula said the project collapsed after its major donor withdrew support in 2013.
“We were doing fine until Africa Development Foundation pulled out in 2013. There was nothing happening, like dead, because we didn’t know where to go. We didn’t know where to start,” Mazula said.
Proceeds from the sale of the peanut butter used to pay school fees and buy uniforms for children with Down Syndrome.
“The problem is buying the peanuts. The machines are there. All we need is peanuts,” Mazula said.
“Even if you don’t give us money, kindly buy us peanuts — those big ones,” she said.
