Bulawayo woman dies in house inferno

BULAWAYO, OCT 5, (SOUTHERN EYE LIVE):   A woman believed to be about 35 years old died while a 43-year-old man was seriously injured after a house they were sleeping in caught fire in Iminyela, Bulawayo, in the early hours of Monday.

Bulawayo deputy police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Thandekile Ndlovu said the fire could have been caused by a candle left burning after the two fell asleep.

“On the 04th of October 2026 at around 2300 hours, a 43-year-old male adult of Iminyela, Bulawayo, was at his place of residence with the now deceased where they were using a candle to light their room,” Ndlovu said.

“Later on, they fell asleep, leaving the candle burning and the house subsequently caught fire.”

According to police, the man woke up at around 3am and found the room on fire.

“He managed to escape from the house, leaving the now deceased inside. He sought assistance from his neighbours, and fire brigade was called.”

Firefighters found the woman already dead. The woman’s body was taken to Bulawayo United Hospitals for a post-mortem, while the injured man was referred to Mpilo Hospital for medical attention.
