Beitbridge duo jailed nine years for stock theft

BEITBRIDGE, OCT 6, (SOUTHERN EYE LIVE): Two Beitbridge men have been sentenced to an effective nine years in prison for stealing cattle from a fellow villager.

Brighton Sibanda (33) and Reason Sibanda (33), both from Chitulipasi, were convicted and sentenced to nine years in jail each by the Beitbridge Regional Magistrates’ Court for stock theft.

The court heard that between June and July 2026, the two men, together with two accomplices who remain at large, hatched a plan to steal cattle belonging to Mberengeni Ndou, who also resides in the area.

The offenders took advantage of Ndou’s cattle grazing unattended at grazing lands some distance from his homestead.

The two men then drove away two brown heifers with stub horns.

“On executing their plan, the offenders took advantage of the fact that the cattle were unattended at grazing lands far from the victim’s homestead,” the prosecutors said.

The stolen cattle were tied and transported using a scotch cart belonging to Brighton Sibanda before being sold to a woman identified as Magret Sibanda.

The theft was subsequently uncovered after a local villager alerted Ndou, who immediately reported the matter to the police.

Police investigations led to the arrest of Sibanda and Sibanda, while the two stolen heifers were recovered.

The two men were subsequently prosecuted and convicted, resulting in their effective nine-year prison sentence.
