BULAWAYO, OCT 9, (SOUTHERN EYE LIVE): Bulawayo's 11 municipal libraries have received 2 497 books donated by Book Aid International, boosting the city’s reading and information resources.
The books were received, processed, catalogued and distributed equally among the city’s 11 branch libraries during August.
Each library received 227 books comprising 77 fiction and 150 non-fiction titles.
The Director of Housing and Community Services Dictor Khumalo reported to the council that the distribution was part of efforts to improve access to information resources and promote a culture of reading among residents.
"A total of 847 fiction books and 1,650 non-fiction books were distributed across the library network," the council report said.
"The recipient branches were Mzilikazi, Nketa, Njube, Waterford, Entumbane, Tshabalala, Mpopoma, Pumula, Magwegwe, Nkulumane and Luveve."
The new books are also expected to strengthen children's library programmes, which continued across all 11 branches during August.
Activities included storytelling, riddles, games, reading-aloud sessions and general children's reading programmes.

The council report said the activities were designed to promote children's imagination, creativity, language development, critical thinking, reading fluency, comprehension and confidence.
The additional books would provide children and other library users with a wider selection of reading materials, further supporting the city's efforts to develop a reading culture.
