BULAWAYO,OCT 9, (SOUTHERN EYE LIVE): The City of Bulawayo has joined the global breast cancer awareness campaign, with councillors and management wearing pink ribbons during the October Full Council Meeting to encourage residents to take the disease seriously and seek early screening.
The local authority said councillors and council staff would continue wearing the universal pink ribbon throughout October in solidarity with people affected by breast cancer and to raise public awareness about the disease.
The campaign is being commemorated under the theme, “Every story is unique, every journey matters,” which recognises that breast cancer affects individuals differently and that every patient’s experience is unique.
“The City of Bulawayo has joined the global campaign of raising awareness on breast cancer with Councillors and Management wearing the universal pink ribbon to sensitise the public on breast cancer during the October Full Council Meeting,” the local authority said.
It added that councillors and staff would continue wearing the pink ribbon throughout the month in line with the international awareness campaign.
Although breast cancer is more prevalent among women, men are also at risk of developing the disease.
The City of Bulawayo urged residents and other stakeholders to visit their nearest health centres for breast cancer screening, particularly during October, when awareness activities are intensified.
“The City encourages residents and stakeholders to visit the nearest health centre and screen for breast cancer, especially this month when there is a heightened awareness on the disease,” the local authority said.
