Gweru man narrowly avoids jail after striking uncle with axe

A 40-year-old Gweru man narrowly avoided jail time, receiving a wholly suspended three-month sentence after striking his 56-year-old uncle three times on the head with a small axe following a brawl over beer.

Blessed Bhebhe was convicted of physical abuse recently when he appeared at the Gweru Magistrates Court.

The court heard that the attack took place at Ntabeni village in Lower Gweru on August 4 this year after Bhebhe arrived home drunk. His uncle reprimanded him for prioritising beer over food, and this did not go down well with Bhebhe, who, in a fit of rage, picked up an axe and hit him three times on the head.

The uncle later reported the assault to the police, leading to Bhebhe’s arrest.
