ZIMBABWE Cricket (ZC) has paid tribute to former national team player and manager Mohammed Ahmed Meman, affectionately known as Babu who passed away in Leicester, England, after a period of ill health yesterday.

He was 73.

In a Press statement released today, ZC expressed its deep gratitude for Meman’s significant contributions to cricket in Zimbabwe.

“Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) has learnt with great shock and sadness of the death of former Zimbabwe international cricketer and national team manager Mohammed Ahmed Meman, affectionately known as Babu,” the ZC statement read.

“He passed in Leicester, England, on the morning of this Wednesday July 2, 2025, at the age of 73, after a period of ill health.”

Meman’s playing career saw him proudly don Zimbabwe colours, most notably featuring in a One-Day International against India during the 1987 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

In that match, he scored 19 runs.

A talented off-spin bowler and right-handed batter, Meman also showcased his all-round abilities representing Shropshire in England’s Minor Counties Championship between 1977 and 1980, where he scored 888 runs (including two centuries) and took 55 wickets in 32 matches.

Locally, he was a respected figure at Universals Cricket Club, known for his skill, leadership and dedication.

“ZC is deeply grateful for Babu’s enduring contributions to cricket in our country, both on and off the field,” the statement continued.

“His passion, humility and dedication will always be remembered by those who had the privilege of working with him.”

Beyond his playing days, Meman remained deeply committed to the sport.

He served with distinction as the Zimbabwe national team manager from 1992 to 2006, guiding the team through its crucial early years as a Test-playing nation.

His valuable insights also extended to his role as a selector, where his sharp eye for talent helped shape the national squad.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to his beloved wife, Aisha, and children — Iqbal, Fazila and Sadiya — as well as to his extended family, friends and all who knew and loved him. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” the ZC statement concluded.
