THE City of Bulawayo has opened its public swimming pools, offering residents a perfect way to cool off.
The facilities are professionally manned by experienced lifeguards to ensure a safe and enjoyable environment.
The operated pools are located at Barham Green, Bulawayo City Pool, Northend, Mpopoma, and Luveve.
An additional pool at Barbourfields is run through a public-private partnership.
The City’s Swimming Pools Superintendent, Sibonizwe Vincent Ngobe, emphasised that resident safety was paramount.
“We have employed highly qualified and experienced lifeguards who are members of the Zimbabwe Lifesaving Society to prevent accidents and drownings,” Ngobe said.
“Our lifeguards and coaches also provide expert instruction to individuals, schools, and clubs, fostering a safe and supportive learning environment.”
He added that cubicle attendants are available to securely store bathers’ belongings using a token system, and that the council works closely with organisations like the Bulawayo Amateur Swimming Association to keep the pools vibrant.

Ngobe indicated that the Bulawayo City Pool is the most popular due to its central location and facilities suitable for professional competitions.
The pools cater to all age groups, from toddlers as young as two to senior citizens.
In the October council agenda, the housing and community services director, Dictor Khumalo, reported on the successful partnership with Sanctfyd (Pvt) Limited at the Barbourfields Pool.
The five-year lease, revised due to Covid-19 and set to end next year, has led to major refurbishments.
“Substantial investment by the company has included a new multi-filtration system,” Khumalo said.
“They have also installed CCTV cameras, built a seating shed for patrons selling refreshments, installed new LED flood lights, and a Zesa pre-paid meter.”
The entry fee for the Barbourfields pool is US$2 for adults and US$1 for children.
