Mphoko siblings steal show at swimming championships

The Bulawayo Amateur Swimming Association (BASA) Senior Championships came to a thrilling close last Sunday, dominated by the outstanding performances of teenage siblings Senamile and Shane Mphoko of Crusaders Club.

The week-long gala at City Pool saw 15 year-old Senamile and 14-year-old Shane electrify the crowd with a staggering medal haul.

Shane powered to gold in the 200m breaststroke, 200m butterfly, 100m freestyle, 200m freestyle, 200m individual medley, and 50m butterfly, also securing silver in the 50m breaststroke.

Not to be outdone, Senamile seized gold in the 200m breaststroke and 200m Butterfly, alongside silvers in the 100m freestyle, 200m individual medley, 200m freestyle, and 50m butterfly.

Their remarkable success highlighted an event that also featured a visiting delegation from Botswana and unfolded during a period of transition for BASA, following the recent appointment of an interim committee.

BASA chairperson Lucinda Afzal in welcoming athletes and officials, called for unity and reflection within the local swimming community.

“It is always a difficult task to stand in front of a group when there are disputes and infighting,” Afzal said.

“When everyone says, ‘we are doing it for the love of our kids,’ but you see no love, tolerance, or sportsmanship in many actions, it is prudent for each of us to step back and introspect.”

She urged parents to channel their energies constructively.

“The energy must be directed at closing ranks, building love, and creating a calm, optimal environment for both parent and athlete,” Afzal said.

"After years on swimming committees, I have concluded that for the athlete to perform and be happy, the parent must be happy first.”

Afzal also thanked the past board for their efforts and appealed for support for the interim committee as it works to foster harmony among clubs.

The championships concluded on a promising note for Crusaders Club, which is set to celebrate its centenary alongside the City Pool next year.

The triumphant performances of the Mphoko siblings have undoubtedly set a vibrant tone for the season ahead.
