When Southern Eye visited the shops on Wednesday morning, shop owners were standing outside their premises trying to come to grips with what had happened. Residents also stood in small groups discussing the alleged burglary.

Police on the other hand, maintained a heavy presence and could be seen taking fingerprints from the damaged doors.

The affected shops were Savemore supermarket, Guzzlers nightclub and Queenspark East bottle store.

“We came here in the morning, only to find that thieves had broken into the shop. They stole all the cigarettes and tempered with the till. Fortunately there was no money in the till,” a manager at Savemore said.

He said they suspected that the thieves did not have a car otherwise “they would have wiped out everything”.

When contacted for comment on the matter, Bulawayo police spokesperson, Inspector Mandlenkosi Moyo refused to comment saying he did not know the Southern Eye.
