AN MDC-T member in Matabeleland South has been expelled for campaigning for her lover, reportedly standing as a Zanu PF candidate for council elections in the province. Report by Nqobile Bhebhe

This comes as the party has expelled two senior members for standing as independents, while another was fired for attending a Zanu PF election campaign. Sources in the province told Southern Eye that the officials have been served with their dismissal letters.

The affected include Gwanda North district secretary Gift Sibanda, Barclay Nkala (Gwanda North elections director), SolaniMoyo (Bulilima East organising secretary) Trymore Moyo (Bulilima East chairman) and Lora Nkomo.

Sibanda is eyeing Gwanda North House of Assembly, but MDC-T fielded Thandeko Mkandhla amid an outcry from the party’s supporters. Nkala was expelled for signing Sibanda’s nomination papers. Solani Moyo on the other hand, was blocked from challenging former parliamentarian Norman Mpofu in the primary elections and decided to stand as an independent candidate.

Trymore Moyo was expelled for standing as an independent in the council race. Nkomo was suspended for allegedly attending a Zanu PF campaign launch and openly campaigning for her lover, a Zanu PF candidate in Gwanda. “The province has since written to all districts informing them that no members should work with the five,” the source said. “Anyone who associates with them also risks being fired.” MDC-T provincial chairman Watchy Sibanda yesterday confirmed the development, but could not give more details.
