MDC leader Welshman Ncube has urged Zimbabweans to turn out in huge numbers for Wednesday’s harmonised polls and vote President Robert Mugabe out, whom he accused of ruining the country’s economy.

Addressing scores of party supporters in Manama and Ntepe villages on Thursday, Ncube said Mugabe is now too old to run the country and there was need for new blood to oversee Zimbabwe’s affairs.

“A quarter of the world’s diamonds by value are found here in Zimbabwe. We are the second best in the world in terms of platinum production and we are the most literate people in Africa, but the question is: Why are we so poor?” he asked.

“It is because the country lacks leadership. On Wednesday you should send Mugabe to retirement so he can go and play with his grandchildren in Zvimba.”

Ncube said the country needed new blood to restore the economy and provide employment.

“The country needs new blood like me to restore the economy and provide employment. You will make a rare history if you vote for Mugabe as you will be entered into the Guiness Book of Records for being the first country in the whole world to vote for an 89-year-old President,” he said.

“He is too old to an extent that he is even embarrassed by his looks, as he has opted to use his 1975 picture for campaign posters.”

Ncube also took a swipe at MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai for having urged the people of Matabeleland to vote for him and not the MDC as it has few members.

“They are saying vote for them because you are few in Matabeleland and they are closer to removing Mugabe. It then means you have no right to choose a leader of your choice,” he said.

“In fact, we are not few as they allege. That is why they want our votes.”

MDC secretary-general Priscilla Misihairabwi-Mushonga said the people of Matabeleland should punish Mugabe for the Gukurahundi atrocities by voting against him.
