The MDC-T had indicated that it will defy Chombo’s directive, but Moyo’s election indicates a major climb down by former Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai’s party.

The party had initially seconded National University of Science and Technology lecturer, Mandla Nyathi to be the mayor, but also shortlisted Moyo as Plan B, in case Chombo’s order carried the day.

Former football administrator, Gift Banda, will be Moyo’s deputy.

Moyo was elected unopposed, while Banda beat competition from Collet Ndlovu and Ernest Rafamoyo.

Banda got 14 votes, Rafamoyo eight, while Ndlovu received seven.

Moyo and Banda succeed Thaba Moyo and Amen Mpofu, respectively.
