The South African team leapfrogged overnight leaders Zimbabwe with a strong second round showing before making a strong case in their title defence with another superb performance in the third round.

Gunning for their seventh consecutive victory in the victory in Africa’s premier biennial team competition, the South African side combined for a second round 204 and carded a third round 202 to hit the front.

South Africa were scheduled to take a commanding 13 shot lead into the final round ahead of Zimbabwe, who followed their opening 204 with rounds of 215 and 208.

Zimbabwe is being represented by Thembelani Vundla, Christain Mbanga Biggie Chibvuri and Clive Nguru while Roger Baylis is the team coach.

Hosts Swaziland are third on 657 after posting rounds of 215, 223 and 219 while Reunion were in fourth position on 661 after carding rounds of 219, 226 and 216.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe’s leading professional golfer Brendon De Jongé will be hoping to bounce back from a disappointing perfomance at the weekend when he takes part at the 2013 CIMB Classic in Malaysia.

The $7 million CIMB classic gets underway today at Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club. The US-based Zimbabwean golfer missed the cut in Las Vegas, but there’s still reason to believe he’ll succeed in Malaysia where he finished in a tie for fourth position last year.
