Bulawayo Athletics Board (BAB) chairperson Manuel Mpofu said they were expecting more athletes to take part in the race as registration was for free.

Mpofu said free registration for athletes taking part is a welcome development that will also allow school pupils to register for the race on their own capacity.

“We are expecting athletes to come in numbers as registration goes for free which is good for athletes from primary and secondary schools who can now come and register as individuals. As BAB, we appreciate the move to include primary school athletes through the five kilometre race, hoping that it will help lay a good foundation for our future athletes,” Mpofu said.

The Old Mutual and the Spar 10km races are the last races for this year in the City of Kings and Queens.

Mpofu encouraged athletes to come and improve their talents pointing out that 10km is a distance that brings a lot of competition in the race.

He said the sponsors were yet to reveal monetary prizes for the winners of the race.

“The sponsors are yet to disclose prizes for the winners, but I can safely say that winners will walk away with handsome moneys. The prizes might be disclosed on Saturday (a day before the race),” he said.

Rutendo Nyahora and Wirimai Juwawo won the women and men’s category in last year’s edition.

Juwawo won the senior men’s race in a record of 29mins 50,3secs, while South Africa-based Nyahora clinched the women’s first prize finishing the race in 34mins 38secs.
