In a statement, police spokesperson for Bulawayo province Inspector Mandlenkosi Moyo said the rainy season demands extreme caution on the roads as the wet surface presents motorists with difficult navigation conditions.

“Motorists should not get onto the roads unless they are certain their vehicles are in mechanically sound condition,” Moyo said.

“They have to ensure that tyres have treads for sufficient grip while brakes and wipers are in perfect condition. Motorists will come across flooded rivers and streams and they should never attempt to cross them.

“When it is raining or the road is wet, it is wise to drive at a slower speed. If these and other measures are observed, motorists are rest assured that weather-induced roads accidents will drop significantly this rainy season,” Moyo said.

Driving in the rain on Bulawayo roads is a nightmare as the city’s streets literally turn into flooded streams due to the poor drainage system.

The heavy rain that pounded the city centre and surrounding suburbs yesterday saw serious flooding of streets, particularly at intersections where the water collects resulting in some cars stalling after water gets into engines of low lying vehicles.

Bulawayo mayor Martin Moyo yesterday said the poor drainage system was being caused by people who dump refuse in the drains.

“There is a problem with our drainage system and the problem is being caused by people,” said Moyo.

“I did a clean-up sometime last month and I realised that our drainage systems were blocked. People are the ones dumping refuse in our drainage and it is hard to realise the hidden rubbish. Council has a shortage of manpower (to clear the blocked drainage system),” he said.

He appealed to residents to desist from dumping rubbish in drainage system.
