A man was allegedly stabbed in the early hours of yesterday near TM Hyper in the city centre while an unspecified number of teenagers were mugged and robbed after attending fireworks displays at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair showgrounds on Saturday.

Several were treated at various hospitals around the city as crime intensifies ahead of the festive season.

Although police could not immediately confirm the resurgence of criminal incidents, residents have reported an upsurge in criminal activities with murder, muggings, rape, house break-ins and theft soaring.

Official statistics obtained from Bulawayo police revealed that there were more than 100 people on the police’s most wanted list in the city, among them murderers and rapists.

In fact, rape tops the list of suspects on the run.

Some of the suspects were believed to be the ones continuing to perpetrate crimes across the country.

Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Mandlenkosi Moyo said they had since launched a manhunt for most of the suspects on the wanted list.

“As police, we have since launched a manhunt for the most wanted people and these are not the only ones. There are many criminals that we want to arrest,” Moyo said.

“Some of these criminals were released on bail and never returned to appear at court. We appeal to members of the public to assist police to bring to book all these wanted people. They can do so by supplying police with information that will lead to the arrest of the wanted criminals,” he added.

Moyo said members of the public could supply information through suggestion boxes, calling the police hotline or reporting to the nearest police station. He said if those criminals were not brought to book, crime would continue to rise.
