GWANDA — The Peoples Own Savings Bank (POSB) Gwanda branch was on Friday and Saturday closed for business after daring robbers gained entry into the bank through the rooftop in a futile bank robbery on Thursday evening.

However, the suspects reportedly left empty handed after they failed to open a safe that had cash. POSB clients were being referred to the post office.

“For withdrawals and Western Union transactions please visit the post office,” a notice posted outside POSB read.

The bank is reportedly closed to allow for repairs to the damaged roof.

Although police were not readily available to comment, sources told Southern Eye that the suspects who were armed with explosives, had managed to open one safe which did not have money.

It is alleged the suspects then failed to open the second safe which had cash probably due to the fact that time was running out and dawn was approaching.

It could not be established how much was in the safe at the time the burglary was committed.

Security personnel from Fawcett reaction squad reportedly went to the bank twice that evening as they responded to alarms, but left after realising the doors were not tampered with.

There was no power on Thursday night and electricity was only restored towards midnight the following day.

The suspects are believed to be experts as they reportedly tampered with the bank’s closed circuit television cables before getting inside the bank. The suspects were yesterday said to be on the run.
