BBA nominees have been ruled out of Basketball Union of Zimbabwe (BUZ) elections to be held following the association’s failure to submit the list on time

BULAWAYO Basketball Association (BBA) nominees have been ruled out of the Basketball Union of Zimbabwe (BUZ) elections to be held on December 29 following the association’s failure to submit the list on time.

The current BUZ president Addison Chiware said the union was abiding by the constitution that stipulates that any submission after the deadline dates is invalid.

“Bulawayo Basketball Association failed to submit their nominees in the stipulated time and for that reason they are out of the elections.

“It is not a personal decision, but a constitutional requirement that nomination papers should be submitted in time. The constitution is different from some day-to-day businesses whose decisions come from individuals and I am also governed by that constitution as well,” Chiware said.

Candidates for any BUZ post are expected to be Zimbabwean and should also be in possession of an administrative diploma. Chiware said associations were notified about the requirements two months before the deadline.

“We gave notice to associations 60 days before the deadline and we also furnished them about the requirements for one to be eligible to contest in these elections. Our constitution requires one to be a Zimbabwean with at least an administrative diploma which should accompany nomination papers,” he said.

He, however, referred this publication to BBA saying that the issue was an association internal matter.

“I think you should get in touch with BBA because this is an internal matter. Maybe they can tell you the reason why they did not submit their papers in time,” he added.

BBA president Opportunity Moyo said she was not in a position to comment as they were yet to have a meeting yesterday.

“I cannot say anything for now because we are yet to hold a meeting as BBA. You can call me later,” she said.

Meanwhile, BBA league action continued on Saturday with Highlanders returning to their winning ways beating Oilers 77-64 in a match played at Northlea High School.

Highlanders were handed their first defeat of the season by Southern Mavericks who beat them 34-42 a fortnight ago.

Inconsistent Kings surprised Giants 61-57 to claim their first victory in three matches.

In the women’s league, Lakers won their two matches of the day beating Mavericks 80-47 before handing Highlanders their second consecutive loses beating them 48-40.
