The new league will be confirmed today during the annual get-together at Royal Gardens.

Bulawayo Chess Association (BCA), which has been in place for a year, will have its official launch at the get-together event this evening. Bulawayo Chess Club (BCC), National University and Science Technology (Nust), Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC), Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), Zimbabwe School of Mines and Bulawayo Polytechnic are some of the teams that will be competing in the BCA League.

The chess association conducted four tournaments this year under the Thabang Moyo-led executive.

The executive elected in August is led by Moyo of Bulawayo Chess Club, deputised by Gibson Manhuru of Bulawayo Polytechnic, with Brighton Duburu as secretary-general, Russell Dzute as the director of public relations, with Moses Mutipforo director of finance.

“Tomorrow (tonight) we will be having an official launch of the Bulawayo Chess Association that has been running throughout the year.

“In the same event we are also going to discuss the introduction of the chess league which is our target for 2014,” Moyo said.

Mutipforo said he will work hard to secure financial support for the association from the corporate world.

“We are working out on engaging the corporate world to sponsor chess because we don’t have any sponsors yet. We are still working on getting sponsorship for our association for us to have a smooth chess season next year,” he said.

Chess tournaments have been attracting good turnouts so far this year, each being attended at least by 100 participants indicating a huge interest in the indoor board game.

Nomalungelo Mathe of Sizane High School has marked a new era in chess, picking pieces of silverware in countries as far as Brazil and Greece.

A mini tournament involving players from various clubs in the city will spice up the event.
