Mthokozisi Nkomo (30) was convicted on his own plea of guilty when he appeared before Gwanda magistrate Sheila Nazombe.

Nkomo told the court that he intended to sell the bottles worth $54 to raise money to start a business of selling airtime recharge cards.

Prosecutor Alexander Moyo said before New Year’s at around midday, the manager of Calabash Bar Dumile Daniel placed 65 crates of empty beer and soft drink bottles outside the bar awaiting new stock orders from Delta Beverages.

During the process of helping carry the crates, Nkomo stole five crates of empty beer bottles and one crate of empty soft drink bottles and loaded them into his cart and disappeared.

Daniel discovered the shortage and tracked down Nkomo in the company of police to a local liquor store where he was in the process of negotiating the sale of the empty bottles.

Nazombe advised Nkomo to work harder if he wanted more money.

“You wanted to reap where you did not sow. You are able bodied and you should push your cart harder if you want to start a business,” Nazombe said.
