A 24-YEAR-OLD man from Ascot Infill in Gweru on Tuesday escaped a jail sentence after he was ordered to perform 350 hours of community service for having sex with a minor.

Life Antoyo had sex on several occasions with a 14-year-old girl and the issue only came to light after he assaulted her and she made a report to the police.

Gweru magistrate Rutendo Muchena intially sentenced Antoyo to 12 months imprisonment, but suspended two months for five years on condition of good behaviour.

The remaining 10 months were suspended on condition that Antoyo performs 350 hours of community service at the Gweru Military Museum.

It was the State’s case that on an unknown date in May 2013, the girl went to stay with her sister atin Ascot Infill. In June, Antoyo allegedly proposed love to the girl and they stayed together for two months. A misunderstanding arose between the two resulting in the girl leaving Gweru to stay with her other sister in Kwekwe.

Earlier this month, the girl returned to Gweru in a bid to resolve the misunderstanding with Antoyo, but a heated argument arose resulting in him assaultingbashing the complainant. The girl reported the matter to the police who discovered that Antoyo had engaged in sex with a minor and he was arrested.
