A 20-YEAR-OLD Bulawayo man allegedly raped a 15-year-old girl at a bushy area in High Mount last Friday.
Cloud Phiri was remanded in custody to March 10 when he appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Gladmore Mushove facing a rape charge.
According to prosecutor Caroline Matanga, the girl and her younger brother left home to look for firewood in High Mount around 9am when they were approached by Phiri who asked where they were going.
The two informed him that they were looking for firewood and Phiri started proposing love to the girl.
Matanga said the girl spurned Phiri’s proposal and he suddenly grabbed her when they had reached a bushy area and pinned her to the ground.
The brother tried to fight him off but failed and then ran to seek for help.
Matanga said Phiri tore the girl’s panties and raped her while she was screaming.
The girl then ran home and informed her mother, who reported the case to Sauerstown Police Station.
Phiri was tracked down and frogmarched to the police station by members of the public who effected a citizen’s arrest on him after the girl’s brother had told them what had transpired.
The police held an identification parade and both the girl and her brother pointed to Phiri as the alleged rapist.
The girl was taken to hospital for a medical examination and results showed that she was indeed raped.
