Five teams from Imbizo, Khami, Mzilikazi, Reigate and Bulawayo Central will converge at the National University of Science and Technology (Nust) as the province will be selecting a provincial team that will travel to Marondera for the inter-provincial championships on March 20 and 21.

In Matabeleland South, Dombodema High school will host the province’s districts while Matabeleland North districts will meet at Inyathi Mission.

Master-in-charge (athletics) for the Bulawayo Metropolitan Province Peter Gambiza yesterday said they were working against time to finalise preparations for the competitions.

“We are working hard to finalise the preparations, today (yesterday) we are having a vetting exercise and an officiating meeting at Northlea High School. We are optimistic everything will be in order on Thursday (tomorrow).

“For the sake of time we are not only going to have a cross-country on Thursday, we are also going to have field events and some few track events heats so that on Friday we continue from where we would have left,” Gambiza said.

Sparrows Athletics Club athletes are expected to shine in the competitions with the most awaited battle in the Under-20 boys’ sprints where Milton Boys High’s Andile Khumalo and Mncumbatha’s Pride Mugwagwa — both from the same club are expected to clash on Friday.

Khumalo enjoyed a less competitive event at Founders High school two weeks back during the Bulawayo Central District Inter-schools competitions, winning six gold medals while Mugwagwa dominated the Imbizo District inter-schools competitions at Nust last week.

Townsend and Sparrows sprinter Yvonne Vanhuvaone is also expected to steal the show in the competitions.

Gambiza said this time the province will make efforts to produce a better team that will not just travel to Marondera to make numbers, but to scoop a number of medals.

“From what I have witnessed so far, we are going to have a competitive event on Thursday and Friday. We are going to have a good competition that will help us select a team that will go and scoop medals in the inter-provincial competitions in Marondera,” he said.
