National Arts Merit Award (Nama) nominee and founder of Umahlekisa Comedy Club, Ntando Van Moyo, told Southern Eye Lifestyle that people should come expecting an unforgettable night.

“People should not come expecting ordinary jokes that people share on social networking sites such as Facebook and WhatsApp. This show is bigger — something you have not seen before. We have taken this to a higher level,” Moyo said.

Nine stand-up comedians are expected to perform for 15 minutes each including another Nama 2014 winner Simbarashe Kadongonyara, aka Simba the Comic King.

“Our comedy club has grown amazingly. When we formed the club in March 2013 we were just the two of us, but we have grown exceptionally,” Moyo said, adding that he saw a gap in the entrepreneurial side of comedy.

“I noticed people mainly concentrated on performing comedy as a hobby and not as a business.”

Moyo said he believes there will be a great turnout for the anniversary celebrations, and that it will be a huge success.

“Our comedy nights have always had an amazing turnout, I am optimistic that in five years to come comedy will be a renowned form of entertainment in the city. We have achieved so much in a year, we have organised workshops to train upcoming stand-up comedians and motivational speakers,” he said.
