MORE than 100 houses in Dete’s Mutuya suburb have been destroyed by heavy rains pounding Matabeleland North province, leaving large numbers of families homeless.

Residents who spoke to VOA Studio 7 said they needed urgent help as they were currently living in the open and had run out of food supplies as their reserves were also soaked in rains.

One of them, Thembinkosi Ndlovu, said the government should use money generated from Campfire projects in the area to assist them in building new houses.

Ndlovu says Campfire funds should be used for such purposes instead of enriching few people.

Another Dete resident, Stanely Torima, said residents of Mutuya township were desperate for help.

Local parliamentary representative Molly Mnkandla said she was not in a position to comment as she was attending an important workshop.

She is believed to be engaging the government on this issue. — VOA
