PERPETUAL PHIRI OWN CORESPONDENT

Tariro Chipumuro (28) pleaded not guilty to theft and was remanded out of custody to April 9 for continuation of trial.

State allegations were that on December 20 2013, Chipumuro, who was stationed at the provincial headquarters’ finance section, was given keys to the safe by his superior Boniface Mudavahnu and tasked with keeping money belonging to the police force.

Chipumuro was the sole custodian of the safe keys and money.

On February 10 this year, Chipumuro allegedly did not report for work and he was not at his residence when some officers were sent to check on him.

His wife gave an assistant inspector the safe keys and when it was opened in the presence of officers from different sections, it was discovered that $3 584,75 was missing upon counting. An audit was later conducted and confirmed that the amount could not be accounted for.

When Chipumuro returned to work the following day, he allegedly failed to satisfactorily account for the money. He allegedly denied stealing it.
