THE ancient city of Masvingo tonight hosts its inaugural provincial awards ceremony dubbed Masvingo Music Awards.

The first ever edition of the ceremony has been slated for Charles Austin Theatre.

Proud Masekesa of P&P Global Marketing — the organisers of the ceremony — told Southern Eye Lifestyle in an interview that all was set for the grand ceremony.

“We want to recognise outstanding achievements in the arts sector of Masvingo. A lot has been lined up and music lovers should come in their numbers and see what Masvingo has got for them. We intend to showcase the talent in the province and also to create a competitive drive within artistes,” said Masekesa.

There are 15 categories and musicians will walk away with a trophy for each and an undisclosed prize for best song of the year, best new artiste, best male, female artiste, music and video producer, afro-pop/rhumba and dancehall, among others.

“We thought of this initiative last year, but we didn’t have much capital to implement. This year we approached a number of companies who are assisting us in doing it and each award has its own sponsor,” he said.

“Masvingo is excited about the ceremony. We have been getting calls from people, some who are out of the country, registering their appreciation.

“We have a lot to offer — live performances, rap ciphers, stand-up comedy, drama, multi-genre performances and a red carpet treatment to or guests — we are turning this ancient city to an action city.”

Artistes billed to perform include Alchemy, HD, Frisco, Junior O, Flexer, Chenai, Nash, Uncle Jaunda, VaMaster, Okoye, Swagmore, Self-paid, Faster G and Kaybee.
