THE African Women’s Initiative in Developing Economies (Awide) is set to hold its inaugural two-day symposium in Bulawayo starting today.

Awide was established on the principle of sustainable development, equity and gender sensitivity with the aim of empowering women.
Awide regional co-ordinator Thandi Henson said the symposium which would run under the theme “Taking responsibility: Solutions for us”, sought to empower women by enhancing their capacity to effectively utilise locally-available resources to develop their communities and reduce poverty.
“Awide has a mission to bring cohesion and total understanding of the national agenda on the empowerment of women.
It lobbies for the ratification and implementation of policy frameworks that have continued to hinder the progress of women and their empowerment,” Henson said.
“With the primary focus being on empowering the vast majority of rural women, Awide has been at the forefront of promoting women farmers and ensuring adequate skills transfer around processing, packaging and marketing of locally available fruit and vegetables exotic and indigenous produce.
“More importantly, the indaba seeks to bring women together to interrogate themselves on what they are doing to spearhead their own empowerment and try to do away with the ‘blame-game’,” she said.

The symposium, she added, would also focus primarily on issues that affect women in relation to health, water and sanitation issues, women and the economy, women and education, women and spirituality, women and politics, women and the law, and women and the media.
