Sam Hlongwane Mabhonga was sentenced on his own plea of guilty yesterday when he appeared before Gwanda magistrate Maphios Moyo.

The court heard that on January 28 this year, Mabhonga visited his girlfriend Lorraine Mavhungwe at her house and found her preparing a meal comprising of sadza and okra.

“This did not go down well with the accused who hit the complainant with an empty bottle on the face, clapped and kicked her several times all over the body,” prosecutor Mncedisi Dube, said.

Mabhonga later realised he had injured his girlfriend and hired a taxi which took her to the hospital.

Nurses at the hospital then advised Mavhungwe to report the matter to police, leading to Mabhonga’s arrest.
