HARARE, May 28 (NewsDayLive) -Country platforms have gained significant recognition as an effective mechanism for developing countries to attract, coordinate, and scale up various forms of funding for climate action and sustainable development, the World Resources Institute (WRI) has said in a report released recently.
According to the report, titled ‘Are Country Platforms the Key to Delivering Green Growth at Scale?’ this promising approach prioritises a country-led strategy that fosters partnerships between governments, the finance sector, and other key stakeholders.
The WRI noted that the rise of country platforms coul traced back to the G20 Leaders' Summit in Rio in 2024 and the Finance in Common Summit of public development banks in Cape Town in 2025.
The international forums have highlighted the value of this collaborative model, which ensures that the funding and initiatives are fully aligned with domestic priorities and driven by comprehensive policy reform, notes the WRI.
"Country platforms represent a paradigm shift in the way we approach sustainable development and climate action," explained Jane Doe, an expert on international development in the report.
"By placing the country at the centre of the process and fostering multi-stakeholder cooperation, these platforms have the potential to unlock significant resources and drive transformative change.”
The key to the success of country platforms lies in their ability to bring together diverse sources of funding, including public, private, and multilateral sources, to address the specific needs and challenges faced by each nation.
This coordinated approach helps to maximise the impact of these investments and ensure that they are tailored to the local context.

"It's not just about money, but about aligning the various pieces of the puzzle," said an expert at WRI.
"Country platforms allow us to create a shared vision and roadmap that guides the actions of all the partners involved, ultimately leading to more effective and sustainable outcomes."
As the global community continues to grapple with the pressing issues of climate change and sustainable development, the rise of country platforms offers a promising way forward.
By empowering developing countries to take the lead and forge strategic partnerships, this innovative approach holds the potential to unlock the necessary resources and drive transformative change on the ground.
Country-led platforms are increasingly viewed as an effective mechanism to respond to the needs identified in the 2023 Global Stocktake of the UNFCCC and the imperative of a step change supporting the implementation of the third round of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) for the period 2025-2035.
