Mwenezi communities benefit from highway construction

Mwenezi district information officer Rodnoy Kudzanai said the project, being implemented by local contractor Exodus and Company, was making a significant difference in the area.

ROAD construction in Mwenezi district is not only reshaping the Masvingo-Beitbridge Highway, but also transforming local lives through employment, training and long-term infrastructural development.

Mwenezi district information officer Rodnoy Kudzanai said the project, being implemented by local contractor Exodus and Company, was making a significant difference in the area.

The ongoing works, covering more than 18km, are expected to be completed by December 2025.

Out of the 351 workers on site, a large number is drawn from Mwenezi communities, he said.

“This is a critical stretch, and benefits to the community are already visible,” Kudzanai said.

“The contractor is also working with local artisans on tasks such as plumbing and brickwork.

“They are working with local service stations and shops. Even the food for the workers comes from our own communities. This project is supporting our local economy directly.”

He said 96 women were currently employed, while youths made up the majority of the workforce.

“There is also on-site training for interns, assistant operators, machine operators and diesel plant fitters,” Kudzanai said.

“The contractor holds leadership workshops to prepare them for future roles in the industry.”

Kudzanai said the road brought Mwenezi closer to business centres like Masvingo. “It will reduce travel time and improve road safety, allowing farmers to reach markets faster and giving everyone better access to health and education,” he said.
