MP pressures Treasury over Zambezi Valley neglect

Fanuel Cumanzala

BINGA South legislator Fanuel Cumanzala has urged government to prioritise marginalised Zambezi Valley communities in the 2026 National Budget, saying the region continues to suffer “chronic underdevelopment” despite its economic potential.

Cumanzala told Southern Eye that a poor road network, limited health facilities, scarce clean water, low electrification and long distances travelled to school remain daily realities for residents.

“The valley also faces extreme climate risks, yet it receives no dedicated adaptation or disaster management funding,” Cumanzala said.

He added that human-wildlife conflict remained severe, with communities not compensated for losses caused by elephants, lions and other wildlife.

“The new Zambezi Valley Advocacy Brief calls for a ring-fenced development fund, more investment in rural water systems, climate resilient agriculture, improved health and education services, and better digital and road infrastructure,” Cumanzala said.

“We want equity, dignity, and targeted investment not just national averages,” he said, emphasising the need to share the national cake equitably.
