A JOINT farming venture between Midlands Acres and six local farmers has been hailed for boosting food production and crop diversification in the Midlands province.
The project, at New Farm in ward 31, Sherwood West in Kwekwe, has 76 hectares under maize, with an expected yield of 684 tonnes
this season, while nine hectares are under paprika for export.
Midlands Provincial Affairs and Devolution minister Owen Ncube said the initiative demonstrated how structured partnerships between investors and local farmers could accelerate agricultural productivity and strengthen national food security.
“This model clearly shows that when farmers work together with private investors under a supportive government policy, productivity increases significantly,” Ncube said after touring the project on Tuesday.
“We are looking at 684 tonnes of maize from this farm alone, which contributes meaningfully to provincial and national grain reserves.
“At the same time, paprika production strengthens our export earnings and promotes crop diversification.”
Ncube said government was shifting towards promoting climate-smart agriculture in the face of the harrowing effects of climate change.
