Gwanda Provincial Hospital has commissioned a new incinerator to safely dispose of medical waste, a project realised through public-private collaboration.
Matabeleland South Provincial medical director, Andrew Felix Muza, said the incinerator will minimise health risks for workers and the surrounding community.
"An incinerator is essential equipment for disposing of medical waste. This one will help the institution dispose of waste safely, reducing risk to health workers and the public," Muza said.
The project was funded by an NGO, which financed both procurement and construction.
While all medical facilities are required to have incinerators, they vary in size and scope, he added.
"It is not an afterthought but a regulatory requirement for any medical facility.”
A local resident Thomas Ndlovu welcomed the development, saying it was a positive step for the province.
The hospital, a major referral facility along the Bulawayo-Beitbridge Highway, recently also established an intensive care unit to enhance healthcare services in the province.
