Gwanda water attendant fatally attacked by unknown assailants

GWANDA, OCT 14, (SOUTHERN EYE LIVE): A 61 year old man employed by Gwanda municipality died last week following an attack by eight unknown suspects while on duty at the local authority's water pumpstation.

Matabeleland South acting police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Stanford Mguni confirmed the incident, and identified the deceased as Absalom Mafukidze from Chief Makuvaza's area in Gutu.

“On 10 October and at around 1am and at Gwanda Municipality Water tanks located near Jacaranda suburb, Gwanda. Mafukidze and his colleague Kelibone Ncube (49) residing at Spitzkop North, Gwanda were on duty,” Mguni said.

“Mafukidze went to sleep inside the guard room while Ncube was awake. The accused persons comprising five males and three females who were armed with unknown metal objects approached Ncube and manhandled him."

Three of the accused persons allegedly bundled Ncube into a white unregistered Toyota GD6 twin cab vehicle while their colleagues entered into the room where Mafukidze was sleeping.

Ncube was reportedly driven to a secluded area in Gwanda where he was severely assaulted and later dumped on the roadside.

Police said Ncube managed to walk back, and later sought treatment at Gwanda Provincial Hospital after filing a police report.

Police rushed to the scene of the attack and found Mafukidze lying dead inside the guard room.
