ALL roads lead to Jameson High School in Kadoma, Mashonaland West province, as the countdown begins for the inaugural Zimbabwe Under 14, 16, and 18 Chess Championship.

This key event, slated to run from July 4 to 7, will serve as the national qualifier for the highly anticipated World Youth Chess Championship in Albania later this year.

Over 500 chess players from across the country are expected to take part in this tournament.

Tournament director and ZCF Mashonaland West provincial chairperson, Benson Magomo, expressed readiness and enthusiasm for the upcoming event.

“We are now ready to host the World Youth Qualifier at Jameson High School,” he said.

“The school is more than ready to host this event, as confirmed by the school authorities by Friday last week.”

The buzz around this important event is palpable, with Magomo reporting a surge in inquiries and registrations.

“Our table has been seized with people inquiring about this glamorous event, and payments are trickling in, as are registration forms,” Magomo said.

To ensure a smooth and fair competition, arbiters for all three sections (the Under 14, Under 16, Under 18) have been appointed, and the venue set up at Jameson High School was expected to be fully prepared by the close of business yesterday, according to the organisers.

Beyond the intense competition to select the nation’s best to represent Zimbabwe in Durres, Albania, from October 3 to 16, the championship will also feature concurrent seminars.

These valuable sessions will cater to arbiters, trainers, and organisers, offering a unique opportunity for development and knowledge sharing within the Zimbabwean chess community.

“All roads lead to Kadoma, Jameson High School in Mashonaland West province, as we select the best of Under 14, Under 16 and Under 18 to represent the nation at the World Youth Chess Championship in Albania,” Magomo reiterated.
