THE Chinhoyi chess community commemorated the International Day of Chess by holding an open tournament at King Solomon High School yesterday.

The tournament attracted some of the town’s best players like Joram Mudzamba, Michael Huna, Muzhona Muzhona, Rhema Magomo and Eulogia Jim, among others.

A rapid chess tournament with a time control of 20 minutes per player and a total of 7 rounds was played. The players exhibited some brilliant tactics and strategies on the chessboards.

The tournament's organiser Benson Magomo said such events should be held at least every month and must include female and primary school categories.

“In future, we need to have such tournaments monthly with three sections: the open section, ladies section and the development section, mainly targeting learners,” Magomo said.

Mudzamba and Huna scooped the first prize, while Magomo topped in the female category.

International Chess Day is celebrated on July 20, the day the International Chess Federation was founded in 1924.

This year’s commemorations were held under the theme, Every move counts.
