This came to light when Bhekumusa Mlilo (45) appeared before Gwanda magistrate Douglas Vakayi Chikwekwe facing charges of contravening Section 289 (2) of the Firearms Act, failing to secure a firearm.

He pleaded guilty to the charge and was fined $100 or two months in prison. Charges against Mlilo, as outlined by the prosecutor Mncedisi Dube were that on July 3 at Econet shop, he commenced duty at 6pm taking over from Sikhumbuzo Moyo. He put the firearm into a holster that does not close.

He then fell asleep between 2am and 4am and woke up to discover that the gun was missing. The weapon, whose serial number is 38826, has not been recovered.

Meanwhile, Matabeleland South acting police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Christopher Ngwenya has urged members of the public with information on the missing firearm to contact the police.

He also urged security guards to be on high alert, as criminals have developed sophisticated ways of committing crime.
