Matabeleland South deputy provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Christopher Ngwenya confirmed the incident.

“I can confirm that we have received such a report and the suspect is in police custody assisting with investigations,” he said “The ambulance has been recovered intact.”

Eyewitnesses said the man they identified as Polite Ngwenya, has a history of mental illness and was recently released from prison having served almost a year for violent conduct.

Ngwenya is alleged to have threatened a female nurse who had remained in the ambulance while the driver had gone to buy a drink.

Fearing for her life, the nurse bolted out of the ambulance.

Ngwenya is said to have driven for about 40km from Gwanda town to his rural village where he abandoned the ambulance at Lushonkwe Clinic in Makwe.

He is likely to be charged with car theft and driving without a licence.
