President Robert Mugabe yesterday officially operationalised the new Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport terminal in Bulawayo when his Air Zimbabwe Boeing 767-200ER landed at the newly-constructed site.
Mugabe landed at the airport at 10.45am in a plane bound for Victoria Falls to cap graduates at the National University of Science and Technology (Nust) accompanied by close to 10 people.
The visibly tired Mugabe disembarked from the plane slowly holding onto the rail to balance himself.
He was met by Transport minister Obert Mpofu, Sports Arts and Culture minister Andrew Langa, Bulawayo Provincial Affairs minister Eunice Sandi Moyo, Zanu PF politburo member Sikhanyiso Ndlovu, Bulawayo Zanu PF chairperson Callistus Ndlovu and service chiefs.
The landing of the president at the new site marked the operationalisation of the airport.
It will be officially opened on a date to be advised.
The terminal has been under construction for the past 10 years.
