The car was a complete write-off but Mkhwananzi and his friend only sustained minor injuries. Mkhwananzi, who was traveling to Gwanda with a friend, said he lost control of the vehicle while trying to avoid hitting some donkeys on the 80km peg.

Mkhwananzi said he veered off the road towards the donkeys and lost control of the Honda Fit which overturned and landed on its roof in a nearby ditch.

He said they managed to crawl out of the mangled vehicle before a haulage truck driver pulled the wreckage out of the ditch.

The two were taken to Gwanda Provincial Hospital where they were treated and discharged while the vehicle was towed to Gwanda.

The Bulawayo-Gwanda highway has had numerous fatal accidents caused by stray livestock that graze along the road.

Transport minister Obert Mpofu recently indicated that his ministry was contemplating auctioning livestock found on the country’s highways to curb loss of life.
