The matter came to light when Blessness Phiri (24) a shopkeeper at Thandabantu Store located at Lushonkwe business centre appeared before Gwanda magistrate Olivia Mashava Mashaire yesterday facing charges of possessing 21 twists of mbanje.

Phiri, the mistress who sneaked into her lover’s matrimonial bed while his wife lay asleep in the same bed, initially told police that she used mbanje to protect her private parts from unnatural diseases and to ward off evil spirits.

Phiri, however, changed her statement when she appeared in court saying she had been forced to make the statement by the police who assaulted her.

In denying the charge, Phiri said the shop belonged to the family and members worked in shifts, hence the drugs could have belonged to any other member of the family.

Judgment has been set for today.

The court heard that some cops went to Thandabantu store on March 15 to arrest Phiri for an assault-related case.

A local headman allegedly tipped off the cops that the shop also sold mbanje.

The police interrogated Phiri who retrieved 21 twists of mbanje with a street value of $10,50 from a cash box in the shop.
