Gugulethu Ncube (22), who was 18 when she committed the offence, had denied the charge when she appeared before Bulawayo Regional Court magistrate Mark Dzira.

However, Dzira convicted her saying the boy’s evidence was credible and without influence from anyone to incriminate her.

He sentenced her to eight years in jail, but three years were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.

“The court called the complainant who demonstrated through idols with all organs how you abused him,” Dzira said.

“The next witness was his grandmother who was called to school when the complainant had demonstrated the sexual act to other children while at school. The evidence by the complainant is accepted by this court as credible and there was no sign that someone might have influenced him to implicate you in the offence. You did not challenge his evidence and the court believes that he gave credible evidence and therefore you are convicted of the offence.”

In sentencing her, Dzira said the court considered that cases of child sexual abuse were on the increase and perpetrators must be given deterrent sentences.
